The sad indifference
Original version (Italian):
“La mesta indifferenza” by Patrizia Stefanelli
Il mondo in pochi tratti
oltre la zanzariera
a volte può bastare. Neanche serve
a queste mura popolari uscire
fuori dal taglio netto dei mattoni.
Un uomo passa in bicicletta.
Canta.
Didietro, porta un seggiolino rosa.
La tivù è sempre accesa:
– Figli venduti per trenta denari,
seni svuotati così come case,
spose bambine nei letti di marmo
e gli occhi enormi di vecchi neonati.
Qui, da questa finestra,
viene il garrire di uccelli di passo:
tra i vivi e i morti sempre uguale.
English version:
“The sad indifference” translated by Patrizia Stefanelli
The world in a few glimpses
beyond the mosquito net
sometimes can be enough. It's not even necessary
for these working-class walls
to go outside the clean cut of the bricks.
A man passes by on a bicycle.
He sings.
From behind, he carries a pink child seat.
The TV is always on:
– Children sold for thirty pieces of silver,
empty breasts like the houses,
child brides in marble beds
and the enormous eyes of old newborns.
Here, from this window,
comes the chirping of migratory birds:
between the living and the dead, always the same.
