Maya Singh

Hi! I’m Maya, I recently graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in English with Creative Writing. At university I did my dissertation on ecopoetry and wrote two ecopoetic collections of my own, exploring the possibilities of erasure poetry as a literary recycling process. I also wrote short fiction with an emphasis on retelling or using elements of folklore and myths. While studying creative writing I found editing my classmates’ poetry and fiction in workshops to be really interesting and rewarding. As for the literature side of my degree, I had the best time studying the Romantic and Gothic traditions in greater depth and they have really influenced my own work.

Literature has always been so important to me. I see it as a unique opportunity to live hundreds of lives through stories and learn about worldviews and experiences different to my own. Some of my favourite writers include Ocean Vuong, Mary Oliver, Joy Harjo, Diana Wynne Jones, Samantha Shannon, Jordan Ifueko, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Jane Austen. I read widely but fantasy novels and nature poetry are especially close to my heart!

In my free time I keep a scrapbook journal to track my thoughts on the books I read, work on my own writing projects, and go on woodland walks to spot interesting wildlife.

I became an editor at The Poetry Lighthouse because I love to be a part of a creative and passionate literary community and I’m excited about reading new writing. The Poetry Lighthouse provides an amazing space for writers at any point in their careers to publish their work and I’m so honoured and happy to have a hand in that!
