Scavenger Hunt: D, the Letter of the Day
I wasn’t looking for anything today
other than getting away from the house
on my afternoon walk, after
being cooped up for weeks,
getting a little fresh air and
exercise away from the recliner.
But look what I found, one drumstick,
its matching partner missing,
and the drum to play them on;
dirt plugs lying on sidewalks and
driveways from freshly aerated lawns;
and a dead mouse lying on the edge of the sidewalk,
unrelated to all the other famous mice
I was familiar with.
My walk ended up being a scavenger hunt
for things beginning with the letter D.
I could go on with the list from my viewing:
day lilies popping up from the ground,
dandelions blooming—but I was more
than satisfied with the first few items.
Maybe on another day, like tomorrow,
when it is supposed to snow,
the first snow of spring,
I will find other things to observe,
beginning with the letter S, that is,
if I don’t stay inside and sleep the day away,
as was in my current plans:
my snow day, the three S’s,
sofa, sleep, snore.
