Todo lo que sé de la muerte
lo aprendí de apuro 
cuando te vi pasar en la camilla
a la terapia intensiva

yo era atea como vos y solo vi
un cuerpo ajeno y liviano
pasar a la velocidad de la luz

y es que acaso vivimos confundidos
o solo somos luz y no otra cosa
porque supe de repente en un instante 
que vos en ese cuerpo 
ya no estabas

te llevaban a Emergencias
como un trofeo de guerra
había prisa en los médicos por llegar
había prisa en la muerte 
por huir del territorio

minutos antes 
pedías que te trajeran un libro 
minutos antes te abrazaba y me decías 
sos tan buena

después la luz que se cortó en el hospital
la puerta medio abierta 
y yo que te espiaba pude ver
cómo te rodeaban de velas 
vivo todavía 
como en un cuento de Poe

alguien me abrazó y lloré
perdimos dijo el doctor

y supe de la muerte
que tiene apuro papá
y en el apuro es desprolija 
porque algo se llevaba para siempre
lo supe
pero algo no
en ese cuerpo derrotado
vos no estabas

I learned the hard way
when I saw you go by on the stretcher

I was an atheist like you and I only saw

you asked for a book
minutes before I hugged you and you told me
you’re so good

then the power outage in the hospital
the door half open
and as I was spying on you I could see
how they surrounded you with candles
still alive
like in a Poe story

someone hugged me and I cried
we lost him said the doctor

and I learned about death, dad
it is always in a hurry
and in its haste it is careless 
because something was taken forever
I knew it
but not everything
in that defeated body
