A fresh paperback
brought home limp and cool
in a paper bag -
the cover warms as
the pale cheek stroked smooth
of someone sad -
and each page falls
backwards from my fingers
with a kiss
that ruffles the silence
with regrets we cannot read
the story in reverse.
