On the Drive Home

by Nicholas Olah

Half past midnight— every road is blocked
like an artery, patience as frail
as nerves.

The distance between here and home
grows wide and then
wider.

Hard rain pounds the road, heavy
as footsteps marching
up wooden stairs—

  the nervous waiting

for what comes next.
