Uncaught Waves
Do you remember? You took me to the sea, the wind howling loud,
you and I. Youth felt invincible, stronger than the northern gusts,
where I longed to capture the waves, while you sought only to
capture me.
In the endless stretch of the North Sea, it felt as
though we could outrun the land itself, as if
somewhere within the boundless waveslay
something grander, far more beautiful than the shore.
We chased each other through the sand, our feet
swallowed whole. Yet this escape of ours
was never more than an illusion.
We fled toward the gulls and caught the waves,
yet whispered to ourselves that we were
never once chasing them.
What if, in that moment, we had confessed?
Perhaps, we’ll never know
for the waves eluded us, tethering
as always to the shore.
