Too Far

We wondered, back then,

If we could go too far.

There was a pact between us

To let the other know

When we slipped over the edge,

Turned a corner at full speed,

Vanishing into chaos.

We took care of ourselves,

Despite the frequent joyrides,

Booked night after night,

As the entire town slept,

While we remained wild—

Delinquently so, perchance.

We thought it would never end,

Till death do us part,

Gripped tightly together,

Before we flipped a switch—

Allowed complacency to steal

What was not ours to hold.
