Maud Gonne Remembered

(Died, 27 April, 1953)

She died today? Maud Gonne?

When I was scared and on the run

From the English, she took me in,

Me, with a single pair of socks worn thin.

She gave me two of woven wool herself:

“Even a man with books upon a shelf

Remembers to mind his feet,” she said.

I’ll not believe that she is dead.

Oh, her hair, I knew, was likely gray,

And the magic’s fled her body’s sway,

But still I loved as a poet might:

I loved her pilgrim soul and grace

And loved her eyes and changing face

And loved her day and starlit night.
