INTO NIGHT

Silhouetted in the dusky sky,

palm trees sway in the breeze

like a windmill struggling

to catch a breath to pump

a stream of water

for thirsty cattle circling

around the trough below.

A bull lifts his head

and bellows pleas

across the dusty field;

metal on metal

shrieks in unison

as palm branches quiver,

vanish like all things,

into the night.
