I Remember A Time
a skinny girl wanted to
play sweet songs on the piano
for me
how my young son held her
as a baby, drinking a bottle
with gusto
her twin sister held simultaneously
by my even younger son,
eased by his warmth
young boys’ arms surrounded
baby girls, little sisters they wished for
but did not have
now marriage will come swiftly
around the bend for piano girl -
a shiny shooting star
the piano faded – a train whistle
gone far down the track
turned shear vibration on the skin
the boys now men, the girls
now women, light speed -
time a translucent beam
I am awed by how this passage
is mere mist upon my face -
how memory sings in whispers
I remember a time . . . . .
