This May morning slows
dozing its way to afternoon,
lamb and cuckoo
counterpoint
the hours.
Sun warmed spear-minted bank,
thickens air humid
with chlorophyll exhalation.
A blizzard of midges
swarms the dappling water.
Chrome yellow flags
stand guard where the sedge
vouchsafes the ranunculus
swaying in it’s dance of seduction.
A neon streak of kingfisher blue
cuts through.
Mud foetid between my toes,
fishbones in my teeth,
I am burrowed down
in this secreted valley;
like a man on the run,
forever.
