Brocken Spectre
Enter another world of mountain mists -
There’s chance that gathered cloud in low sunlight
On peak ascent or ridge’s sweep may hide
The subtle gleam of colour, plain in sight.
An immense shadow leaps across the hill
Unites a secret mist enabled tryst -
A figure circled bright in rainbow glows;
Our worlds collide – we pause to bridge their midst.
A transient beauty haunts the space between
Returns my gestures, reaching arms out wide,
And stepping where I step across the haze;
Sibling of dark and light so magnified.
Should fog then wane or mass - impeding sun
That apparition wavers - fades - dispels.
Forget-me-not until we meet again,
Memories will endure without farewells.
(A Brocken spectre is an atmospheric phenomenon, named after the German mountain on which it was first recorded).
