A man once tempted an ignorant boy

Original version (Arabic):

“أغرى امرؤٌ يوماً غلاماً” by Ibrahim Al-Mundhir

أغرى امرؤٌ يوماً غلاماً جاهلاً
بنقوده حتى ينال به الوطر

قال ائتني بفؤاد أمك يا فتى
ولك الدراهم والجواهر والدرر

فمضى وأغمد خنجراً في صدرها
والقلب أخرجه وعاد على الأثر

لكنه من فرط سرعته هوى
فتدحرج القلب المضرج إذ عثر

ناداه قلب الأم وهو معفّر
ولدي حبيبي هل أصابك من ضرر؟

فكأن هذا الصوت رغم حنوه
غضب السماء على الغلام قد انهمر

فدرى فظيع جناية لم يجنها
ولد سواه منذ تاريخ البشر

فارتد نحو القلب يغسله بما
فاضت به عيناه من سيل العبر

ويقول يا قلب انتقم مني ولا
تغفر فإن جريمتي لا تُغتفر

واستل خنجره ليطعن نفسه
طعنًا فيبقى عبرةً لمن اعتبر

ناداه قلب الأم: كفّ يداً ولا
تطعن فؤادي مرتين على الأثر

English version:

“A man once tempted an ignorant boy” translated by Mayar Yaqoub

Once upon a time, a man tempts a naïve boy with his wealth, to obtain what he seeks,

“Give me your mother’s heart and have all the coins, jewels, and pearls”, he speaks.

So, the boy with a dagger rips his mother’s heart out and comes back without delay,

but in his haste the heart succumbs, falls on the ground, and  rolls away.

The mother’s heart, covered in dust, speaks to him: “My darling son, did something hurt you?”

The heavens rage against the boy despite the softness in the voice’s hue.

Then he realizes that he committed so dreadful a crime that any other one of his kind world fear,

and falls to his knees, to wash the heart with his remorseful, overflowing tears.

He says to the heart: “Take your revenge on me and do not ever forgive me as my crime is unforgivable”,

then he removes the dagger to stab his heart instead, a warning to others, a lesson so unforgettable.

The mother’s heart speaks to him: “Stop this now and do not kill my heart twice, I beg you”
